WELCOME TO AFFLECK VINEYARD
History of Affleck Vineyard.
Affleck was planted in 1976 and is one of the early cool climate vineyards of the Canberra District. The vineyard is approximately 7 hectares and planted with Semillon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Cabernet and Merlot, with a small number of Muscat vines.
Affleck is situated on the shale of the Lake George Escarpment, 800 metres above sea level. Temperatures range from –12 to 40 degrees C, with rainfall around 475mm a year and significant snow falls. Picking takes place around April/May, much later and cooler than other wine districts in Australia.
The vineyard was named Affleck (a corruption of 'achadh-nan-leac' - the field of stones, or stony field) after the farm in Huntly, Scotland occupied by the Hendry family for more than 250 years. As all the dry stone walls are made from stones removed from the vineyard the name seemed appropriate. Affleck is a family affair with all the work shared between hard working family and friends.
